Allergy doctor

So you think you have an allergy? In the Allergiecentrum Hasselt you can have your allergies tested. Allergies to pollen, house dust mite, pets, food allergies, insect venom as well as allergies to medication can be tested by our doctor.

Most importantly are you symptoms. The allergy tests are interpreted on the basis of your complaints and history. The allergologist (allergy specialist) will always take in mind your symptoms and your test results before making a diagnosis.

This is possible with skin prick testing. The results are almost immediatly known. There are also specific blood tests or breath tests possible for diagnosing an allergy or intolerance.

Allergies can give rise to: sneezing, runny nose, nose congestion, itchy eyes, shortness of breath, fatigue, bloathing, intestinal complaints, nausea, diarrhea, and so on.

Some allergies can be treated with immunotherapy to reduce the burden of the disease.

Kids and babies as well as adults can be tested and treated for allergies in the allergiecentrum.

Other possible tests at our centre include gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance and fructose intolerance.

Adults as well as children can be tested for allergies. Children can not be tested for medication allergy, this is done only in hospital.

The allergiecentrum is lead by Dr. Belkhouribchia, he is also associated with the department of allergology of the University Hospital of Leuven.

Wat is an allergy?

The immune system's role is to protect the body against virusses and bacteria. When the immune system however reacts to things that aren't harmful, like pollen, house dust mite or food, then you have an allergy. An allergy can be mild or very annoying and even life-threatening.

There are a lot of different kinds of allergies. You can be allergic to allergens in the air like pollen, house dust mite, pet epithelia. Or you can be allergic to food or medication. There are also people that are allergic to insect venom like wasps or bees. An other kind of allergy is contactallergy where you react to cosmetics, hair dye, metals, etc.

Allergy test

Allergietests

The diagnosis of an allergy is being made by special skin prick tests (allergy tests). These are very little pricks on the skin after a tiny bit of allergen is brought into the upper layer of the skin. By this method the allergologist can determine if you are reacting to a specific allergen. These tests are always interpeted in the context of your symptoms.

Skin prick tetsing requires standardised solutions of a specific allergen. Food can however also be used to carry out skin prick tests.

We do not test contactallergies (for example allergy to nickle, cobalt, cosmetics, hair dye, etc). For these kinds of allergies you need to see a dermatologist.

Allergietests on blood

Some specific allergy components can be tested in the blood. The allergologist can use these bloodtests to determine if you have a primary allergy or a cross reaction. These tests are also useful to make an estimation of the severity of a possible reaction.

Blood tests are also useful to exclude other etiologies besides allergies that can give rise to your symptoms.

The blood tests are complementary to the skin prick tests.
